Fact: Diamonds From Meteorite Impacts
50,000 years ago a meteor estimated to be 164 feet (50 meters) across created the Barringer Crater (AKA Meteor Crater) near Winslow Arizona. The meteor was traveling at an estimated speed of 28,600 miles per hour (7.9 miles per second or 12.8 kilometers per second). The meteorite left a crater about 4,000 feet in diameter, 570 feet deep, and with a rim 150 feet above the surrounding landscape. The force of the impact created high enough pressure and temperature to turn carbon containing minerals into diamonds.

Fact: The Deepest Borehole Drilled into the Earth
The deepest borehole drilled into the Earth is known as the "Kola Superdeep Borehole", and is located on the Kola Peninsula in Russia (formerly the USSR). The drilling started in 1970 and the deepest bore was completed in 1989. After 19 years of drilling, the bore extended 12,261 meters (40,226 feet or 7.62 miles) below the surface. The bore had penetrated through 1/3rd of the estimated 22 mile thick Baltic crust.
