Fact: Induced Seismicity

After a dam is created the water upstream of the dam begins back up, creating a reservoir. The weight of this water creates pressure on the underlying bedrock. This excess pressure is known to have triggered earthquakes near at least three of the dams throughout the world.

Fact: Facts about Greenland

Because the coastline is made up almost entirely of numerous fjords, the Greenland coastline is approximately 39,330 km (24,430 mi) long, which is about the same length as the Earth's circumference at the Equator. The weight of the massive Greenlandic ice cap, which covers over 80% of the surface, has depressed the central land area to form a basin lying more than 300 m (1,000 ft) below sea level. If this ice sheet were to completely melt, sea levels would rise more than 7 m (23 ft) and Greenland would most likely become an archipelago of islands with the central area completely under water.

Fact: Shrimp Shell Bandages

A recent innovation in bandage material has been made that has significantly improved clotting ability compared to gauze bandages. These new bandages contain a mixture of ground shrimp shells and vinegar, a mixture that has been found to clot blood almost instantly. The chitosan in the shrimp shells has a positive charge, while the cells present in blood have negative charges. The negative charge of the cell is attracted to the positive charge of the chitosan. As soon as they touch, the cells fuse to the chitosan and form a clot. Bandages of this type are already in use by the US Military in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Fact: Dry Ice

The term "dry ice" was originally a trademarked name that has since become genericized. Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide. Under normal atmospheric pressure dry ice does not melt, instead it sublimates (turns directly from a solid to a gas). The temperature at which dry ice under goes this transition is -109.3 °F (-78.5 °C). This is cold enough to cause frost-bite to any skin it comes in contact with. Dry ice was discovered in 1825.
